Every so often, a new ‘miracle’ ingredient enters the beauty world and suddenly it can be found in every product and in every brand. However, a skincare buzz that entered the beauty world and seems to be hanging around for the long run is the concept of ritual skincare; taking a more natural, mindful approach to beauty.
As a botanical-based skincare company, this has always made sense to us and is, in fact, not a new concept at all. Ritual skincare (slow beauty) focuses on self-love, skin-love and appreciation of oneself, rather than on the latest ‘anti-ageing’ or ‘spot correcting’ quick-fix ingredient.
So, why a skincare ritual rather than a skincare routine?
Well, to us a routine is something you do because you must do it. A ritual is a chosen practice of self-care; something that makes you feel good about yourself and boosts your day.
Beauty rituals are nothing new. In fact, mindful beauty practices date back thousands of years and stem from ancient traditions such as Ayurveda and even witchcraft; with rituals such as self-oiling massage and adorning the body with crushed petals and herbs. These rituals were much more than just beauty, they were about honouring oneself, the body and the earth. Our chosen ingredients encompass centuries old traditions, tapping into the natural world of skin beauty and healing whilst allowing oneself to relax into the ritual of skincare.
Argan oil, for example, has been used for thousands of years by the Moroccan women to protect their skin, hair and nails from the harsh Moroccan climate. Standing the test of time, this oil is mainly recognised for its anti-ageing and skin restructuring properties due to the essential fatty acids, antioxidants and Vitamin E that are naturally present. Indeed, the Argania Spinosa tree is much celebrated in Morocco and is so special that it is protected by the Moroccan Government. This oil gives back. It not only has amazing results for the skin but gives back to the Moroccan women who harvest the argan fruits by offering them a fair wage and giving their families access to education that may not otherwise be available to them.
In ancient times, wise women and healers carried certain essential oils near to their hearts. They believed these oils were protective talismans but were also used medicinally when needed. Such oils have been incorporated into our skincare products, for their healing properties as much as for their delicate aroma.
Simplify your routine
Cultivating a skincare ritual isn’t hard and doesn’t require you to buy product after product. A skincare ritual is simply about honouring yourself and adding an intention to the process (adding a sense of mindfulness and purpose). A skincare ritual is a mindful daily check-in, a quiet moment to be with your thoughts and to take a few moments of quiet.
Incorporating intention into your personal skincare practice acts as a stress reliever. It helps you connect all your senses and imparts a feeling of calm and peace, leading to a productive day and a restful night’s sleep.
