Clay masks are a great way for both men and women to pamper themselves and invigorate their skin.
Before we show you the correct technique, here are a few FAQs.

How to clay mask
Should I wash my face before using a clay mask?
Yes, however we only recommend oil cleansing. Oil cleansing allows you to remove the surface layer of dirt, oil and makeup without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Applying a mask with surface grime can hinder the ability of the clay to deep cleanse the pores.
How often can I use a ghassoul clay mask?
There is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach to skincare. It is more important to notice how your skin reacts to the treatment. Some skin can feel tight during/after a mask, some can feel glowing immediately after… Clay masks have a strong absorption effect on the skin so using a maximum of once per week is recommended.
Should I allow the clay mask to dry on my skin?
Absolutely not!
There are three phases of a clay mask. The first phase is the damp phase where your skin drinks in the beneficial minerals from the outside. Then the dry phase, which exercises the capillaries and stimulates blood flow as the mask cools and contracts and lastly the dry phase, which draws out moisture from the surface of the skin, causing dehydration and irritation. This last phase is the phase that should be avoided. When the clay begins to dry a simple spritz of rose water can help loosen the mask and keep the clay active.
Why can I not use a metal bowl/spoon?
When clay comes into contact with water the clay is ‘activated’ and contains negatively charged ions which can be affected by the ions present in metal utensils.
Equipment
- Small, non-metal bowl
- Small, non-metal spoon
- Clay mask
- Water/rose water
- Mask brush
How to prepare a clay mask
Firstly, ensure all equipment is clean, including hands and face.
Begin by mixing the clay. Start with approximately ½ to 1 tablespoon of clay and slowly add ¼ teaspoon of room temperature water/rose water. Carefully mix with a non-metal spoon.
Continue adding small amounts of water and mixing until the clay has reached the desired consistency (a smooth paste).
Using a mask brush (or fingers), apply the mask to your face and neck if desired.
Allow the mask to remain on your face for 5-10 minutes. When the clay begins to dry, spritz a little rose water over the mask to keep it moist. If rose water isn’t available, use room temperature water.
To remove the mask, dampen a facecloth with warm water and hold it over the face. This helps loosen the mask.
Gently pat your face dry with a soft towel and apply a few drops of face oil as a light mosituriser.
Note: clay helps increase blood circulation and as a result you may experience a mild and temporary redness for up to 30 minutes.
