About argan oil
Commonly referred to as “liquid gold” or “The Gold of Morocco”, argan oil is one of the rarest oils in the world. It is produced using the kernels of the argan tree (Argania Spinosa), a protected tree found in Morocco, valued for its nutritive, medicinal and cosmetic properties. Its age defying, hydrating and healing properties have not only been around for centuries, but for millennia – a true test of character and quality – derived from nature and unmatched in simplicity by anything man could create!
Argan is mainly recognised for its anti-ageing and skin restructuring properties due to the essential fatty acids, antioxidants and Vitamin E that are naturally present.
Traditionally argan oil is used by the Berber women in Morocco, who use it to nourish and protect their hair, skin and nails from the Moroccan climate. Recently, however, argan oil has become popular world-wide. Due to the fear of over-farming the argan forests, UNESCO has become involved to help protect the vast Argania Spinosa forests which have survived desert conditions since the tertiary period.
Because of our Moroccan heritage, our argan oil is produced in our family-owned cooperative in Agadir, Morocco.
How is argan oil produced?
The fruit of the argan tree is green in early spring and then turns gold and falls from the tree. At this point it is harvested. The outer layer of fruit is removed and the pits are taken from the inside of the fruit. These pits are then allowed to dry in the marvellous Moroccan sun.
The hard work then begins. Traditionally each pit is hand cracked between two stones, the kernels removed and then cold-pressed to extract the pure argan gold. Our cooperative, however, uses modern machinery to extract the oil. This method is far more hygienic than the traditional method of hand extraction and prevents any cross-contamination occurring.
Argan oil is very precious as it takes many hours of physical work to produce (whether the oil is machine or hand pressed). In fact, it takes three days and sixteen pounds of argan nuts for one litre of oil to be made!
Traditionally goats ate the fruit; the kernels in their faeces were then roasted in the sun. These were collected and pressed to extract the oil. This method happened a long time ago but many, falsely, still believe this is the method used!
Composition of argan oil
Argan oil consists of unsaturated fatty acids, Vitamin E/tocopherols, squalene and sterols. Each of these components is unique and useful for different reasons. Some act as antioxidants while others help with chronic inflammation. Some properties are even known for their ability to protect against skin cancer and for being anti-tumorigenic.
Why is argan oil used in every product?
See above! Argan oil is by far the most beneficial oil nature produces. We are so incredibly lucky that our family owns a cooperative in Agadir, Morocco allowing us to be certain of the continuous and amazing quality of our oil.
