World vegan day falls on 1 November, with the month of November being celebrated by vegans worldwide. It is celebrated as a time to recognise how far the vegan movement has come, when back in 1994 the first vegan day was celebrated as a way of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the UK Vegan Society.
Today, November begins, and people across the world will be making the pledge to go vegan for the month. But, did you know that veganism is far more than just the food we eat? Skincare and make-up often contain animal derivatives too. The good news is that it has never been easier follow a vegan skincare routine!
Whilst you may be enjoying all the extra veggies in your food this month (our Serum: Congested & Acne Prone Skin even contains broccoli oil, although we are not convinced you can count this one of your five a day!), it’s often easy to forget about the every day products used, such as face creams and body washes.
Many companies falsely state that vegan, organic and natural products are somehow less effective than their synthetic counterparts. This is simply untrue. Whilst synthetic products can produce an immediate effect, long-term use is detrimental to skin and plays havoc with the skin’s natural bacteria. For example, cleansers can contain a myriad of preservatives, colourants and oil-stripping ingredients. We have been taught that our skin needs to feel tight and stripped of its natural oils after cleansing. This could not be further from the truth and, in fact, science has proven that using such products sends our skin into oil production overdrive, leading to very unbalanced oil production and a tonne of skin issues further down the line. At Nuts Organic, our cleansers contain organic and natural oils and nothing else. Our gorgeous cleansers effortlessly melt away makeup and impurities leaving skin soft and super clean (and yes, contrary to popular belief, oil cleansers are perfect for oily skin). Please read our blog article on the oil cleansing method for further information. Our cleansers are 100% vegan, natural and organic.
Vegan, organic & natural skincare is often referred to as slow beauty. Meaning, that skin needs to adjust to the dramatic change of ingredients and realise that it no longer needs to be in a state of panic – it needs time to re-balance its natural oil production and good bacteria before a positive change is visible to the naked eye. It can take a couple of weeks for skin to look vibrant, fresh and blemish free, and in the settling period it can be very tempting to go back to old habits. Please don’t. Your skin is simply reverting to its factory settings.
Unfortunately, in today’s market, skincare seems to be about massive profit making and not about the ingredients used. A vast number of ingredients used in skincare offer NO benefit to the skin and are often just bulk fillers, labelled with fancy names. Further, many ingredients are derived from animals, such as lanolin, collagen, beeswax, squalene, retinol, allantoin (vegan allantoin is widely available). We simply don’t need these ingredients in skincare products; for every animal-based ingredient there is a vegan alternative which is far healthier on the conscience and easier for the skin to tolerate.
With the colder weather now creeping in and the nights getting longer, there is no better time to concentrate on your skin. At Nuts Organic we are huge advocates of slow beauty, but also taking the time, each day, to enjoy your skincare routine. We have developed an amazing serum, our Brightening Serum, to help combat the effects of long winters, using a special blend of infused botanicals and organic and natural oils to help keep your skin hydrated and fresh. Chapped hands? Try a few drops of argan oil after each hand wash – this amazing oil will keep skin plump and crack-free!
Nuts Organic has always been a vegan brand and will always be a vegan brand.
